Determine the Signs of Choking—They Are Not to Be Taken Lightly!

Determine-the-Signs-of-Choking—They-Are-Not-to-Be-Taken-Lightly

Choking is a life-threatening medical emergency, a universal sign of distress. It is when your air passage gets blocked, preventing you from breathing normally. Choking can cause a series of coughing; however, an absolute blockage of your airway may lead to your death if you do not receive any medical assistance.

Do you know the scariest part of choking? Most of the time, it is silent. You will not know someone is already struggling for air unless you observe them and see their panic signs. If you are the one who is experiencing it, you may find it tricky to get someone’s attention since you cannot yell or call them for their aid.

For instance, you encounter someone dining in a restaurant who suddenly chokes on the food they are eating. You observe that their companion is already delivering back blows and giving them water for relief, but the choking continues. Eventually, the choking victim falls to the ground and struggles to breathe. Because choking cuts off oxygen to the brain, it becomes a life-threatening situation. You need to take immediate action.

To help the fallen individual, rush toward their direction. Have their companion or someone call 911 or the local emergency number for help while you perform abdominal thrusts. Assure the victim repeatedly that you are there to help. If the victim becomes unconscious, try to perform standard CPR with rescue breaths and chest compressions. Continue with the procedure until the medical emergency team arrives.

It is imperative that you know the basics of life-saving procedures to help someone during a medical emergency situation. There are times that the medical emergency team cannot get to the location fast enough. It is up to you to handle the circumstance to help the victim survive. Nothing is more important than saving a life.
