Heartsaver CPR and AED

Same Day Certification! Class Time: Approx 2 Hours (can be longer or shorter depending on class size)

This course is designed to prepare students to provide CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) use in a safe, timely, and effective manner. Heartsaver courses are intended for anyone with little or no medical training who needs a course completion card for job, regulatory (e.g., OSHA), or other requirements. These courses can also be taken by anyone who wants to be prepared for an emergency in any setting.
After successfully completing this course, students should be able to:
  • Describe how high-quality CPR improves survival
  • Explain the concepts of the Chain of Survival
  • Recognize when someone needs CPR
  • Perform high-quality CPR for an adult alone or as a team member during multi-rescuer CPR (child and infant CPR modules are optional)
  • Give effective breaths using mouth-to-mouth or a barrier device for all age groups
  • Demonstrate how to use an AED on an adult (child and infant AED modules are optional)
  • Describe when and how to help a choking adult or child (infant choking module is optional).

Upon successful completion of the course, including a CPR and AED skills test, students receive a Heartsaver CPR AED course completion card that is valid for two years.

This course is designed to prepare students to provide first aid and CPR and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) in a safe, timely, and effective manner. Heartsaver courses are intended for anyone with little or no medical training who needs a course completion card for job, regulatory (e.g., OSHA), or other requirements. These courses can also be taken by anyone who wants to be prepared for an emergency in any setting. If you are a healthcare provider, please take our Basic Life Support course. If you are a daycare provider, you will need to take our Pediatric First Aid CPR and AED course.

This course teaches students to respond to and manage illnesses and injuries in a child or an infant in the first few minutes until professional help arrives. The course is intended for those involved in child care who have a duty to respond to children’s health emergencies, including child-care workers, teachers, foster-care workers, camp counselors, youth organizations, and coaches for children’s sports organizations. This course is also ideal for parents, grandparents, babysitters, and guardians.
After successfully completing this course, students should be able to:
  • list the priorities, roles, and responsibilities of a rescuer providing first aid to a child or an infant
  • describe the four key steps in first aid for children and infants: prevent, protect, assess, and act
  • remove protective gloves
  • describe the assessment and first aid actions for the following life-threatening conditions: difficulty breathing, choking, severe bleeding, and shock

Online Basic Life Support
HeartCode BLS uses a variety of eLearning assets such as dramatizations, eSimulations, animations, self-directed learning, and interactive activities to teach students BLS knowledge and skills. Part 1 – A self-paced series of online training modules (30 minutes – 2 hours based on experience) Part 2 – Skills practice and test at our facility (15 – 30 minutes) After completing the online portion, students attend a structured BLS Hands-On Session with an AHA Instructor. This session focuses on meaningful skills practice, debriefing, team scenarios, discussions of local protocols, and skills testing. Where available, students may also complete the hands-on session with a voice-assisted manikin (VAM). HeartCode BLS is for healthcare professionals seeking an alternative method for completing an initial or renewal BLS Course. After completing the course, students should be able to:

Basic Life Support Instructor and First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor Course
Course Overview:  The AHA Basic Life Support Instructor Course teaches the methods needed to effectively instruct others in the Heartsaver and/or Healthcare Provider resuscitation courses. The American Heart Association requires that Instructors be at least 16 years of age for the Heartsaver and BLS Instructor courses. A BLS Instructor will be qualified to teach the BLS for Healthcare Provider Course as well as the Heartsaver Course for the lay person. (If you would ike to become a Heartsaver First Aid CPR/AED Instructor ONLY, please contact our Training Site for further details prior to signing up.) A BLS Instructor Course is approximately 9 hours. The course consists of BLS Instructor Essentials (3 hours of individual on-line pre-course work), and an additional 6 hours of classroom training and practice. Click here to review our Instructor Timeline. It will explain the steps to becoming an AHA Instructor with South Florida Healthcare Institute and LifeTek Carlson (Training Center). Our Instructor courses are very hands-on, and space is limited. Monitoring and Mentoring:  Each instructor candidate is required to be monitored teaching a BLS class in full to complete the Instructor course requirements. A South Florida Healthcare Institute Training Center Faculty will monitor the class. It is the instructor candidate’s responsibility to coordinate their monitored class. South Florida Healthcare Institute will not issue an Instructor card until a satisfactory monitoring has been done. Once each step of this process is completed, you will receive an AHA BLS Instructor Card which will be valid for 2 years. The ACLS course is designed for healthcare professionals who either direct or participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest or other cardiovascular emergencies. This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care, and critical care units — such as physicians, nurses, and paramedics — as well as others who need an ACLS course completion card for job or other requirements.

Online Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
Heartcode ACLS is the AHA’s blended learning delivery method for the AHA’s ACLS Course. Blended learning is a combination of eLearning, in which a student completes part of the course in a self-directed manner, followed by a hands-on session. HeartCode ACLS is a self-directed, comprehensive eLearning program that uses eSimulation technology to allow students to assess and treat patients in virtual healthcare settings. To enter the course, students must complete a precourse self-assessment. Students will then be presented with a team dynamic lesson and 10 In-hospital patient cases, including a BLS case and 2 megacode cases. The ACLS Course is designed for healthcare professionals who either direct or participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest or other cardiovascular emergencies. This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care, and critical care units such as physicians, nurses, and paramedics, as well as others who need an ACLS course completion card for job or other requirements. This blended learning course requires prior knowledge of ACLS, and may be better suited to students renewing their course completion card versus those taking an ACLS Course for the first time.

The ACLS online certification course includes two parts:

  • Part 1 – A self-paced series of online training modules (3 – 8 hours based on experience)

  • Part 2 – Skills practice at our facility (30 minutes – 1 hour)

Online Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
This eLearning course is the self-directed online portion of HeartCode PALS blended learning, which is followed by a hands-on session for skills practice and testing. HeartCode PALS is a comprehensive program that uses a series of videos and simulated pediatric emergencies to reinforce the important concepts of a systematic approach to pediatric assessment, basic life support, PALS treatment algorithms, effective resuscitation, and team dynamics. Using eSimulation technology, students can assess and treat patients in virtual healthcare settings. In this environment, students also apply their knowledge to real-time decision-making and skills development. Debriefings and coaching are provided immediately after each simulation to facilitate learning. The PALS Course is intended for healthcare providers who respond to emergencies in infants and children, including personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care, and critical care units, such as physicians, nurses, paramedics, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and others who need a PALS course completion card for their job or other requirements. HeartCode PALS is for healthcare professionals and others seeking an alternative delivery method for completing PALS training. This online course is a convenient alternative to classroom-based PALS training. This course may be used for an initial or renewal course completion card. This blended learning course requires prior knowledge of PALS, and may be better suited to students renewing their course completion card versus those taking an PALS Course for the first time.

The PALS online certification course includes two parts:

  • Part 1 – A self-paced series of online training modules (3 – 8 hours based on experience)

  • Part 2 – Skills practice at our facility (30 minutes – 1 hour)

The goal of the PALS course is to improve the quality of care provided to seriously ill or injured children, resulting in improved outcomes.
  • HeartCode® PALS is an online comprehensive eLearning program that uses eSimulation technology to allow students to assess and treat patients in virtual healthcare settings. In this environment, students apply their knowledge to real-time decision-making and skills development.
  • To enter the course, students must complete the PALS Precourse Self-Assessment. Students are then presented with 12 in-hospital patient cases and a team dynamics lesson. Cases may be repeated as many times as necessary to pass. Upon successful completion of all the patient cases, students must pass the multiple-choice exam with a minimum score of 84%.

Adult and Pediatric First Aid CPR/AED Course – American Red Cross – Blended Learning
The American Red Cross Adult and Pediatric First Aid CPR/AED course will prepare you to recognize and care for a variety of first aid, breathing, and cardiac emergencies involving adults, children and infants and meets OSHA/workplace requirements. This is a blended learning course including an online portion and an instructor-led classroom skill session.The online portion must be completed prior to attending the in-class portion and must be taken on a PC or tablet with a high speed Internet connection. Allow approximately 2 hours 30 minutes to complete the online portion. Upon successful completion of this course you will receive a digital certificate for Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED valid for two years. Your certification will be emailed to you within 48 hours of class completion.

First Aid CPR and AED Instructor Course
Course Purpose: The primary purpose of the American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor course is to train instructors to teach the basic-level American Red Cross First Aid, CPR and AED courses. The care steps outlined within this program are consistent with the 2020 International Consensus on CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) Science with Treatment Recommendations and the 2020 American Heart Association (AHA) and American Red Cross Guidelines Update for First Aid.

  • You must be at least 16 years of age on the last day of the instructor course.
  • Possesses current American Red Cross basic-level certification or equivalent certification (see Red Cross Learning Center for equivalency chart).
  • Has successfully completed the online Introduction to the American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/ AED Instructor Course prior to the Precourse Skills Session (This will be emailed to you directly from the Red Cross 1-2 business days after your registration).
  • Has obtained all instructor and participant materials before attending the first session of the instructor course (all materials are provided in your training confirmation email).
Course Objectives:
  • After completing the course, instructor candidates will be able to: 
  • Exhibit the characteristics required of an American Red Cross representative and role model.
  • Follow the directives and procedures related to the conduct and administration of American Red Cross courses, including the Instructor Agreement and Code of Conduct.
  • Conduct courses in a manner that helps participants to stay engaged in the learning process and meet course objectives.
  • Perform applicable first aid, CPR and AED skills to the standard, at instructor-level skill proficiency.
  • Plan for and ensure instructor candidates’ health and safety during training.

  • Monitor instructor candidates’ practice, evaluate performance and provide corrective feedback and encouragement that is consistent with the skill assessment tools.
  • Recognize that the requirements in the skill assessment tools are criteria for ascertaining the proficiency of an instructor candidate’s performance.
  • Choose the appropriate course and materials to meet the specific training needs of instructor candidates or groups.
  • Effectively use program materials and training equipment for both the online prerequisite and the in-person classroom components.
  • Explain procedures for issuing course completion acknowledgments and accessing American Red Cross digital certificates.
  • Deliver quality, consistent and standardized content by following the American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor’s Manual.
