As first responders to a scene of an emergency, EMTs, firefighters, paramedics, and in-facility hospital providers face the challenge and play the critical role of providing the first form of care that a victim receives after suffering a cardiac arrest. This is critical for increasing their chances of survival and can make the difference between life and death. The Basic Life Support (BLS) course is designed to equip pre-hospital providers with the necessary skills such as CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and using the AED (Automated External Defibrillator) to preserve the victim’s brain function and restore the heart to its normal rhythm.

About Our Basic Life Support (BLS) Course

This Basic Life Support (BLS) Course is geared towards healthcare professionals and other personnel who require the skills and knowledge to perform basic cardiovascular life support and CPR as part of their job requirement. It is also the foundation to saving a person’s life after a cardiac arrest. This course takes on a hybrid learning mode that demonstrates how to perform these life-saving acts through videos and the guidance of an instructor.

Basic Life Support (BLS) (2)

Additionally, this course covers how a student should react as a single-rescuer and provide support in a multi-rescue team to perform these basic life support skills in pre-hospital and in-facility settings. Students will receive a BLS provider the same day once they have satisfactorily demonstrated understanding in all the following requirements.

Upon completion of the BLS course, students should successfully be able to:

  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of someone requiring CPR
  • Perform high-quality, life-saving CPR on infants, children, and adults
  • Understand the importance of high-quality CPR and its impact on survival
  • Identify and apply the steps of and concepts behind Chain of Survival
  • Demonstrate the importance of using the AED early
  • Alleviate foreign body airway obstruction or choking hazards for infants and adults
  • Provide effective resuscitation and ventilation with a barrier device
  • Perform their role and responsibilities in BLS management as part of a multi-rescuer CPR

Why Is Basic Life Support (BLS) Important?

The skills learned in the BLS course can be applied to anyone suffering a cardiac arrest or choking and drowning. Often, these BLS skills make the difference between and death for many people as it ensures that the airways and breathing are unobstructed for proper air circulation. In addition, the BLS course is also useful for working professionals such as social and health care workers, security personnel, and public safety officers who may face high-risk clients. As they are usually there at the scene of an emergency before pre-hospital providers, they are critical in increasing the chances of survival and buying some valuable time before emergency medicine aid arrives. Therefore, they must attend this course to ensure they are providing the primary care appropriately.
