Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is important in improving the quality of care that you can provide to children who are severely injured or seriously. Implementing these sets of protocols can make all the difference between life and death as they provide guidelines for responses in emergency and life-threatening situations such as cardiac arrest.

Therefore, South Florida Health Care Institute is committed to providing our medical professionals the training and skills they require to treat their pediatric patients timely and efficiently. This course will cover topics and skills such as PALS treatment algorithms, effective resuscitation, basic life support, pediatric assessment, and managing team dynamics.

About Our Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Course

The Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) course is directed towards healthcare professionals involved in managing cardiovascular, respiratory, emergencies, and cardiopulmonary arrest in children. These personnel could include paramedics, doctors, and nurses in emergency medicine, emergency response, intensive care, and critical care units. This course is also applicable for those who require this training and a PALS course completion card as part of their job requirements

Before commencing the PALS courses, students will have to score 70% or higher on the online PALS Precourse Self-Assessment, which can be accessed on the PALS student website after purchasing the PALS provider manual. Those who have completed this course with a minimum score of 84% and above will obtain their PALS course completion card valid for two years on the same day.

Upon completing the PALS course, students should successfully be able to:

  • Provide high-quality pediatric CPR, AED, and infant CPR following the American Heart Association basic life support guidelines
  • Distinguish which patients will and will not require immediate intervention
  • Recognize the symptoms of stroke, cardiovascular, and cardiopulmonary arrest and provide CPR within 10 seconds
  • Work in multi-rescuer team dynamics
  • Distinguish between respiratory failure and distress, and perform the necessary interventions and care early
  • Distinguish between decompensated and compensated shock, and perform the necessary interventions and care early
  • Distinguish between stable and unstable patients with arrhythmias
  • Identify the clinical characteristics and symptoms of instability in patients with arrhythmias
  • Provide post-cardiac-arrest care management

Why Is Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Important?

While cardiopulmonary arrests in children are rare and more common in those with severe respiratory and cardiac-related illnesses, it is still crucial for medical professionals in pediatric care to learn how to manage cardiac emergencies. Often, respiratory failure and shock will come after a compensated state. However, pediatric patients can quickly deteriorate in such conditions and will require life support and the necessary care they need to increase their chances of survival. In such cases, early identification and detection of symptoms are crucial and should be treated as soon as possible.
