Saving a Life: What You Need to Know About PALS

When it comes to emergency situations, we humans instinctively find means and ways to be able to help a fellow person in need. If we do not have even the most basic knowledge in what to do in certain situations, however, our efforts may just be futile—or worse, would even be harmful to the victim.

Knowing what to do in an emergency situation can mean the difference between life and death. As morbid as it may sound, it very much rings true. Emergencies and accidents happen at the most unexpected times, with no proper medical help and equipment available right away. That is why First Aid must be given, in order to immediately relieve discomfort or pain from the victim—albeit temporarily—until proper medical attention and treatment can be given.

Because of the many risks involved in responding to a person in need without the right medical knowledge, help, and equipment, various courses and classes are being taught to individuals, especially those who are in the field of healthcare. These include cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR classes and First Aid training, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support, or PALS, is a training program or class devised and designed by the American Heart Association (AHA) that aims to aid individuals—especially those who are in the field of pediatric healthcare—in acquiring the skills and developing the knowledge necessary to efficiently manage and handle critically ill infants and children. PALS is essential in handling pediatric emergencies in and out of the hospital.

Skills, methods, and techniques being taught in PALS include recognition and treatment of infants and children who are at risk of cardiopulmonary arrest through pediatric CPR, a systematic approach to pediatric assessment, effective respiratory management, and proper resuscitation dynamics and methods. Proper emergency response is also an integral part and is the first thing taught should any person in the healthcare industry want to get their PALS certification.

Being certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support means that its holder is skilled, and has surpassed training and examinations, and certified in performing various techniques and responses in an event of an emergency involving pediatric patients.
